Alexander Thomas was riding with a group of motorcyclists and quad riders in Hamilton Township around 6:15 p.m. on Sunday, March 9, when the crash occurred, township police said. The group was reportedly driving recklessly in the oncoming lane near Lalor Street and Bunting Avenue, according to police.
Thomas was trying to pass one of the quad riders when he hit the back of the vehicle, lost control, and crashed, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His fellow riders left before emergency crews arrived, police said.
Thomas’ mother, Alexia Smith, launched a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral expenses. She said her son had just been accepted into college.
“My son, my 18-year-old son, lost his life in a horrible motorcycle accident this past Sunday,” Smith wrote. “Alex was full of joy. Full of laughter. So silly, so loving, and had such a big heart.”
Smith said her son was known for helping homeless people and often gave away his coat, shoes, or money.
“I kick myself because I bought him this last bike... the bike that I now know that he rode into heaven,” she wrote. “But I know in those final moments my son was happy. They told me he did not suffer… that it was instant. And that is helping my heart just a little.”
The GoFundMe had raised more than $3,000 as of press time.
Police are asking anyone with information about the crash or the riders involved to contact the Hamilton Township Police Department.
